The Aurora Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 1200 block of 5th Street at 11:12 a.m. Saturday, May 9. A bystander saw smoke come from the house and called 911. The caller advised Aurora Central Dispatch that someone was trapped inside the home. Upon arrival, firefighters found a one-story, single-family home with heavy smoke showing from all sides of the building and could hear the victim calling out for help from inside the structure. Firefighters forced entry and entered the structure, searching for the victim while a hose line was deployed.
The victim was found and rescued within minutes of arrival, then transferred to paramedics for treatment. The patient, a 15-year-old female was in serious condition who suffered from smoke inhalation and was transported to an Aurora area hospital. A second patient, a 19-year-old female, was treated for minor smoke inhalation and transported to an Aurora area hospital. Firefighters deployed an additional hand line extinguishing the blaze within 15 minutes of the fire crew’s arrival. The response went to a second alarm bring a total of 32 firefighters to the scene.
During the fire, a cat and dog escaped the burning home as the victim was rescued. The total estimated dollar loss is $75,000, and Victim Services was called to the scene to assist three residents who were displaced as the home was deemed uninhabitable. There were no injuries to firefighters, and the fire is under investigation at this time.
