City-sponsored Aurora events keep Mike Nelson busy.

The director of community events detailed them for the Aurora Lions Club March 5 meeting at Riverview Diner in Montgomery. Nelson was appointed to lead the Events Division in 2022 after previously serving as an intern and interim manager.
He said his five-person team is responsible for overseeing major events such as Greenfest, a farmers market, parades, fall food truck festival, Independence Day celebration and fireworks shows, Halloween at City Hall and the Christmas-season Festival of Lights. Key responsibilities include handling complex event logistics, such as coordinating security and parking.
Additionally, Nelson serves on the Aurora LGBTQ advisory board, as a liaison for non-development downtown issues and promotes Aurora as a destination for entertainment and culture.
Founded in 1922, Aurora Lions Club is celebrating its second century of community service.
Open to men and women interested in community service, the Aurora club meets at noon on the first and third Thursdays of the month at Riverview Diner, 1420 S.E. River Rd. in Montgomery. Prospective members are invited.
