Aurora’s Dominican Literacy Center is among nonprofits worldwide seeking donations on Giving Tuesday, Nov. 30.
Center director and founder Dominican Sister Kathleen Ryan said, “Giving Tuesday inspires people to give back after Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday have come and gone. DLC donors can do good, quickly and easily.”
Sr. Ryan said the center raised $10,000 in last year’s Giving Tuesday.
Donations are accepted on the DLC’s website, www.dominicanliteracycenter.org, or on its Facebook page, Facebook.com/Dominicanliteracycenter.
She added, “Please help women and their families learn English by donating $25, $50, $100 or your desired amount. Donations will help us provide CDs, ESL and other library books and computer software for women striving to read, write and speak English.”
She said a $100 donation will buy books and tutoring for a student for a year.
The center’s mission is to enable immigrant families to participate in their communities by learning to read, write and speak English.
Since its founding in 1993, the Center has mobilized female volunteer tutors to deliver free English classes one-on-one to more than 150 immigrant women from 16 countries annually. Additionally, free citizenship classes are offered to both men and women. Launched with five students and five teachers, the center has schooled more than 2,000 Aurora-area residents
The nonprofit center is located on the grounds of St. Therese Catholic Church, 240 Vermont Ave. in Aurora.
