Aurora Noon Lions Club opened free monthly eye screenings for children Saturday, May 20.
For children from six months to 16 years old, screenings take place from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Aurora Public Library West Branch, 233 Constitution Drive in Aurora.
Due to lack of space at the library, the Saturday, June 17, screening will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 27 S. Edgelawn Drive in Aurora.
A trained Lion volunteer uses a hand-held Plusoptix screener to check eye health of kids for near-sightedness, called myopia; far-sightedness, hyperopia; and astigmatism, egg-shaped eye.
Parents or guardians are notified if a screening indicates a vision problem that requires a comprehensive exam.
Noon Lions provide the free screenings as a community service.
The service is supported by a grant from the DeKalb-based Lions Club International Foundation. The effort is part of Lions Kidsight USA, community eye-screening for children sponsored by Lions International.
Noon Lions vision screener Michele Needham said, “Be eye smart!
“Vision problems can, and often do, occur without you or your child noticing them.
“Get children’s eyes examined on a regular basis.”
She said warning signs of vision problems are changes in vision, changes in eye appearance, eye pain or irritation, and infections or allergies.
Open to men and women interested in community service, the club meets at noon on the first and third Thursdays at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 27 S. Edgelawn Drive in Aurora.
