The City of Aurora’s Animal Care and Control Division is launching its Pets For Vets Program, waiving all adoption fees for one cat or dog every two years for Illinois veterans. The program provides emotional support, reduces stress, and eliminates financial barriers for veterans looking to experience the joy and healing that comes with having a furry friend.
In order to qualify for the program, veterans must present a valid Illinois driver’s license or State ID with “veteran” printed on it, a federally issued veteran ID card presented with an Illinois driver’s license, and/or an official DD214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty with an Illinois driver’s license.
Veterans will go through the shelter’s standard adoption process to ensure a great match. Following approval, the adoption fee will be waived, and the veteran will walk away with a new companion.
“The Pets For Vets Program is about more than just finding homes for animals, it’s about healing hearts on both ends of the leash,” Animal Control Manager, Kameron DeBoer, said. “For veterans who have faced challenges or trauma, a loyal companion can provide unconditional love, reduce stress, and bring a renewed sense of purpose. At Aurora Animal Care and Control, we’re proud to give back to those who have served by helping them experience the joy of adoption while also giving shelter pets the chance to become heroes in their own way.”
To view adoptable pets, individuals are encouraged to stop by Aurora Animal Care and Control at 600 S. River Street from noon to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Adoptable animals are also featured online at https://24petconnect.com/AuroraAdopt.
