The Aurora Police Department is investigating a fatal traffic crash involving three vehicles that occurred on October 21, 2024, at approximately 12:55 p.m.at the intersection of Farnsworth Avenue and Mountain Street.
Preliminary details indicate that a white 2024 Nissan Kicks, driven by a male traveling eastbound on Mountain Street, attempted to cross Farnsworth Avenue when it was struck by at least one of two northbound vehicles – a black 2008 Cadillac Escalade and a maroon 1997 Ford Explorer. The Explorer rolled over upon impact, and the male driver was pinned inside. Aurora Fire Department personnel extricated him from the vehicle, and he was transported to Ascension Mercy Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Two additional occupants from the other two vehicles were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the Explorer, a 27-year-old male from Aurora, tragically succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at 2:16 p.m.. The Kane County Coroner’s Office has taken custody of the body and will conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause and manner of death. The Coroner’s Office will release the driver’s name at a later time.
The Aurora Police Department’s Traffic Division is conducting a thorough investigation into the crash. The intersection remained closed for several hours as investigators worked to reconstruct the scene. The City of Aurora’s Emergency Management Agency (EMA) and other support services were also notified due to damage to city property, including a pedestrian sign, a streetlight, and a guardrail.
“Our thoughts are with the family of the young man who lost his life, as they navigate this difficult time,” said Aurora Police Chief Keith Cross. “We urge all drivers to use extra caution when traveling on busy roads and stay vigilant at intersections to prevent tragedies like this from happening.”
