The Aurora Public Library Foundation’s annual Winter Gala dazzled Saturday, Dec. 7, bringing together 150 vibrant members of our community for an unforgettable evening. This resounding success celebrated the heart and spirit of Aurora while honoring extraordinary individuals whose contributions have shaped our community in meaningful ways. It was an evening of connection, recognition, and giving—thank you to everyone who made it so special!
The Foundation proudly announced that $5,000 had been donated to match any donations made that night, thanks to the generous support of an anonymous donor. “This achievement underscores Aurora’s commitment to connect people to community and celebrate every story,” said Foundation manager Jordan Debbink-Lesniak. The funds will go towards our Branch Renovation Enrichment Projects to create safe spaces for everyone who visits the library. This incredible generosity set the tone for an evening dedicated to celebrating the people who make Aurora’s library and community thrive.
A highlight of the evening was the honoring of Mrs. Kelly McCleary, a founding board member and the chairwoman of the Winter Gala for many years. Her husband Scott McCleary was presented with the Kelly McCleary Service Award, an accolade named in her honor to recognize her tireless dedication and leadership on the foundation board. The award presentation was met with a standing ovation and followed up with a Proclamation from US congressman Bill Foster’s office. Both are a testament to the respect and admiration she has earned from her peers and the community at large. “Kelly’s dedication to the library and to the community was nothing short of extraordinary,” said executive director Michaela Haberkern. “Her energy and commitment were so inspiring, and it’s hard to name any agency in Aurora that didn’t benefit from her time and attention. And Kelly never showed up alone – she always brought a friend, a neighbor, a young person who needed involvement, along. Her legacy will live on in all those people and their good work.”
Special recognition was given to Alderman Bill Donnell with the Thomas J. Weisner Excellence in Educational Collaboration Award, alongside Mr. and Mrs. Mark and Pam Truemper with the Richard and Gina Santori Lifelong Learning Inspiration Award, for their outstanding dedication and service. Their contributions have left a lasting impact on the community, and the Gala served as a perfect occasion to express gratitude for their efforts.
The Winter Gala 2024 was more than just an evening of celebration; it was a gathering of community spirit, unity, and a shared vision for a brighter future. With its elegant setting, heartfelt tributes, and successful fundraising, it was truly a night to remember.
