As part of our initiative to welcome new Americans, the Aurora Public Library District (APLD) is offering several citizenship and English language-learning programs. Some are already ongoing, and others will begin in just a few weeks!

Citizenship offerings

Starting Saturday, Aug. 28, APLD will be host to citizenship classes sponsored by College of DuPage. Participants will prepare for the U.S. citizenship test throughout the course. For those interested in practicing their English conversation skills, our English Conversation Group meets every Saturday at 10:30 a.m. English learners of any level are welcome to join! For now, the meetings are exclusively on Zoom, but starting September 4, the group will be meeting both in person at the Santori Library, Room 332 and virtually! Please register on our events page: aurorapubliclibrary.org/events.

We’ve had a lot of success with our prior citizenship and English language-learning programs, thanks to passionate APLD workers such as Adult Services Library Assistant, Fabiola Duensing who shared the following story:

“Before the Library closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I had the opportunity to assist a few customers, providing citizenship one-on-one help sessions. One of these customers […] needed help with his citizenship exams and interview. […] Last March, he successfully passed his citizenship test. As soon as he found out that the Library was open, he didn’t want to miss the opportunity to visit and let me know about [the test]. He was very grateful to me and the Library for providing guidance and help when he needed it most. Now, he is happy that he can go and visit his family in Honduras with an American passport and is looking for better opportunities in his life.”

We look forward to welcoming more new Americans to Aurora this year!
