What draws you to the library? From books and digital resources to job assistance and creative programming, libraries are essential to thriving communities and the Aurora Public Library District is no exception. National Library Week is a time to celebrate the many ways libraries bring people together, spark imagination, and support lifelong learning.
First celebrated in 1958, National Library Week (NLW) is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association. This year’s theme, Drawn to the Library, aims to “draw” communities into the library, aligning perfectly with our mission statement: Connecting people to community, celebrating every story. “It’s important to celebrate National Library Week because libraries are the cornerstone of communities,” said senior children’s manager, Monica. “APLD is especially skilled at making our community feel at home by offering relevant programming, resources, and safe spaces to learn.”
In this digital age, there are some that believe libraries are no longer relevant. We forgive them for that. “When I’ve told people I’m a librarian, many have responded ‘Does anyone use the library anymore?’ They think a library is stuffy, dusty, and full of old books,” said West Branch manager, Kiri. “They have no idea that public libraries offer notary services and citizenship classes, serve as warming and cooling centers, provide internet for those who don’t have access to it… NLW is a chance to get the word out and remind our communities that we’re still here, we’re still thriving, and we’re ready to help however we can.”
Aurora has such an incredibly diverse community, and our staff work tirelessly every day to ensure we are providing our customers with the information and resources they need. We have over 400,000 items on our shelves and access to the collections of 10 of the biggest libraries in northern Illinois; almost two million digital titles available for download; we offer over 3,000 programs each year for every interest and stage of life; and we’re working to make all of our locations beautiful and even more welcoming. “National Library Week is important because libraries are worth celebrating! Great libraries connect people and build strong communities, and that’s worth remembering,” added executive director, Michaela.
We are incredibly lucky to serve you and the wonderful community that appreciates the library. Your feedback is so important to us. Recent compliments include: “This is one of the best libraries that I have ever been to. It is beautiful and you are all very helpful” and “The library worker was outstanding in his efforts to assist me. He is very caring and professional in his approach!” and (get the tissues ready) “The Bookmobile is a lot like a flower delivery truck. You’re just bringing joy to people’s lives.” Thousands of people use the library every day in Aurora, from visiting a branch to logging in from home and everywhere in between, and we are honored to help.
This National Library Week, take time to rediscover the library and see how it draws us together as a community. Whether you’re visiting for books, resources, or a place to connect, APLD is here for you.
