Many job-seekers turn to libraries for assistance, whether to use a computer to submit an application, or to attend a program that offers job-hunting resources and tips. The Aurora Public Library District (APLD) is no exception: Here at APLD, we strive to amplify access to employment, especially in a job market that’s been negatively impacted by COVID-19.

Alex Rios, digital services assistant at APLD, will conduct the virtual workshop “How to Build a Resume” at 4 p.m. Friday, July 9. During the program, customers will learn about the many resume-building resources that APLD has to offer. Attendees can tune in through Facebook without registration. To join through Zoom, customers must register for the event.

The workshop will cover topics such as resume design and using resume templates. Examples of good and bad resumes will be discussed, too. Resources on additional resume topics and tips will be shared with attendees.

Just how key is a quality resume in landing a job? “A good resume is often what takes job-seekers to the next step in the hiring process. Hiring managers glance over hundreds of resumes, so a bad resume gets more easily tossed than a clear and relevant resume,” said Rios.

Crafting a good resume has become even more crucial during COVID-19. “Some industries have become more competitive than ever while others have completely shut down, so finding a job is more time-consuming and tedious than ever. To stand out, applicants now need to work very hard to ensure their application materials are almost perfect,” Rios said.

Although the resume-making process may be intimidating, Rios has found that having expert guidance helps. “I’ve been very privileged to have so much access to experts that helped me craft my resume,” Rios said. “So I understand how important it is for people in the community to have similar access to guidance and support.”

In addition to offering job-hunting programs and resources, APLD provides technology, financial literacy, and small business programs and resources, too. You can find them on APLD’s Community Resources page and Events page.

With the elimination of the amount of time customers can spend in the Library, along with the removal of computer and browsing appointments and our recent restoration to full Summer hours, customers have more opportunities to make use of our in-person services to help them on their job-seeking journey. Stop in to peruse our selection of career development books or use our public computers to send in that stellar application after attending How to Build a Resume!
