With the holidays right around the corner, many of us probably are getting started with holiday shopping. Should you get the newest device, or go with a homemade gift? Let the Aurora Public Library District (APLD) help with both items.
Thursday, Dec. 2 at 5 p.m. through Zoom and Facebook Live the APLD will present the Buyer’s Guide to Smartphones on which participants can learn the skills needed to make the purchasing decision that is right when looking to buy your next smartphone. What’s the difference between 4G and 5G? How much memory do participants need for a phone? Why do new phones have so many cameras? We will answer all of these questions and more during this informational program!
Assistant manager of Digital Services, Elliot Witt said, “This program was a customer-requested program that we felt was timely, as the holiday season is coming up and many of our customers will likely be buying smartphones for themselves, friends, or family members.”
Would you rather go with a homemade gift, but the macaroni ornament is not cutting it? for Engraving Keychains will be Tuesday, Dec. 14 at 5 p.m. at the Santori Library Makerspace. You can learn how easy it is to design a keychain, or a batch of keychains, for your entire family or business and how quickly that design can be turned into a real keychain. Best of all, you can take home a keychain of your own, for free!
Witt welcomes all creative participants of all ages who are interested in learning more about the Aurora Public Library District Makerspace and laser cutting. Witt said, “[We will] show customers the versatility of the Makerspace’s laser cutter. In the past, programs have allowed customers to engrave leather bottle openers, notebook covers, and even luggage tags. We have also seen many small businesses use the laser cutter, among other Makerspace machines, to create promotional materials, and we are excited to highlight that usage as well.”
For those who cannot make this session, or simply do not need a gift? The Makerspace is a place for anyone to have a creative outlet. You do not need to have experience with any machine because APLD staff members always are there to help bring your vision to life. You can look forward to plenty of Makerspace workshops in the months to come, with subjects ranging from laser engraving to vinyl cutting, to 3D printing. We can look forward to other workshops in the future when Digital Services expands its workshops further beyond Library subjects to include more explorations of science and technology topics.
In addition to providing a creative outlet and informative programs, the Digital Services team loves to provide resources to our customers. If you, or someone you know, is in need of a computer, we welcome you to a special PCs for People distribution event. This event will be held Friday, Dec. 10, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Santori Library. At this event, customers who meet the eligibility requirements can pick up a free, or discounted PC, or wireless hotspot!
