Schmid, an Aurora native and legendary coach, took to the mound and threw out multiple ceremonial first pitches at 2:30 p.m. between games of a conference doubleheader with visiting Concordia Chicago. AU won both games, 11-1 and 15-9.

Schmid coached baseball at Aurora from 1983 through 1992. His AU teams won 67% of their games (245-122-2) and made it to the NCAA Division III Tournament five times, including the program’s first in 1987.
