Bad: Abortion controversy; Good: busy times

We pack as much information into The Voice each week as possible. News items, photos, and features tell the stories of our communities. We seek to make it presentable and thoughtful.

Often we leave out many items, perhaps often more items than is included. There are various reasons, however, when many good items fail to be included, it is compelling to include some notes in this column.

First, the page one focus this week in The Voice on the leaked memo from the U.S. Supreme Court regarding possible changes in abortion rights and privileges, likely will continue in controversy with a stark division in opinions. It will have legs. Perhaps a thought should be to seek common ground more than retreat to opposing corners. We can act with civility.

Nonetheless, consider important items to our communities:

• The Downtown Aurora Scavenger Hunt by the Aurora Sunrise Rotary will be from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.. Friday, May 14 Hunt headquarters will be at Ballydoyle, 28 W. New York Street in downtown Aurora. Teams of four will compete to include best team theme. To sign up go to: www.rotaryaurora.org.

• The Kane County Health Department (KCHD) will hold additional vaccine site for all groups ages five and older. The Kane Vax Hub, 501 N. Randall, Batavia, will be open from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 14. Eligible individuals are encouraged to make appointments. Call 855-452-6382. There are more than 90 Kane County partners who can provide vaccine service. Key note: In spite of fond wishes, COVID-19 fatigue, grumbling, and ignoring the evidence, the plight of the pandemic is not completed, and, in fact, modestly rising cases continue. Please take note!

• First Fridays this week in Aurora will have a highlight of the Food Truck Festival to fill Benton Street from River Street to Broadway with a wide variety of food vendors. The Aurora Downtown organization will be host to the Food Truck Festival for the fifth time. Good weather is on the menu. Approximately two dozen venues will be open for First Fridays. “We’ve worked hard to continue the local vibe,” said manager Marissa Amoni. Benton Street and Downer Place bridges will be filled with goodies.

• Naperville’s Independence Day weekend became more patriotic with the return of the family festival fun at Rotary Hill. It will be the second Naperville Salute festival. The Salute will last four days, July 1-4, at 443 Aurora Avenue with music, food, fireworks.

• First, will be Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Father’s Day and other celebrations.

• Kiwanis Club of Aurora is accepting nominations for its annual Service to God and Fellow Man. Nominations should be received by June 13.

• Veterans Gardening Day will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 7 at the Marie Wilkinson Urban Farm, 834 N. Highland Avenue in Aurora. There will be special celebrations. .
