On the eve of March Madness for high schools in boys basketball, Geneva High School carries a favorite’s mantle. The Vikings, 27-1, will play in the Metea Valley Regional next week, a part of the Bartlett Sectional as the No. 1 seed. Teamwork, poise, and consistency have followed the Vikings everywhere. They are led by 5-10 senior guard Jack McDonald, a four-year starter. He will attend Augustana College next season. This year he leads a veteran group. “We are looking to continue to improve each day and play our best basketball at the end of the season,” head coach Scott Hennig said. “The group continues to play well together and play great team defense.”

• Another elite team is the Sandwich girls team, which won the school’s first regional championship with a 39-34 victory over host Kaneland. Sandwich was 32-0 after the championship.
