“Pilgrimage,” an art exhibit by Batavia artist and educator Chris Hodge, is hosted by Marmion Academy’s Dr. Scholl Gallery to Feb. 1 at the school, 1000 Butterfield Rd. in Aurora.

The public is invited. Admission and parking are.

Opening with a reception Sunday, Nov. 30, the exhibit showcases spiritual-themed works by Hodge. The collection’s premier work, and most recently completed, is “Hermitage.” Chronicled is the story of creation and the origin of life before descending to depravity and destruction, culminating in redemption and renewal.

In ink on board, “Hermitage” features the story of Gaspard de Sterimberg, a wounded knight returning from the Crusades in 1224. He spent the rest of his life in contemplation and in the cultivation of vineyards on a hilltop overlooking the Rhone River in the south of France. According to legend, other hermits joined him and their wines became legendary.

Hodge said, “We are all travelers through this world. From time-to-time, we need to stop and reflect upon life, existence and where each one of us fits in the scheme of things.”

A 1998 West Aurora High School alum, Hodge began his art education at Waubonsee Community College and continued his studies at North Central College where he received a bachelor’s degree in art education and a master’s in educational leadership and administration.

The gallery is not wheelchair accessible.
