Micah Coffey of Batavia High School, was drafted by the Chicago White Sox last week in the Major League Baseball amateur draft in the 30th round.
Coffey, a senior who played shortstop for the University of Minnesota in the recently-completed season, is a graduate of Batavia’s Class of 2014 and was the starting quarterback on the 2013 football team which captured the Class 6A State championship in an eight-class playoff system.
Coffey’s batting average was .340 his junior season with Minnesota and his average was .278 his senior season. He is listed on the Minnesota roster as 6-1 and 200 pounds.
Minnesota was one step short of qualifying for the College World Series when it fell to top-ranked Oregon State in two games in the championship round of the super-regional tournament last weekend. Coffey was on the teams that won the Big Ten Conference championships in 2016 and 2018. This year’s Golden Gophers were ranked No. 10 in the Nation.
