Officers from the Montgomery Police Department responded to a report Tuesday, May 6, from Lakewood Creek Elementary School regarding a student found in unauthorized possession of a weapon on school grounds.

Initial investigation by the school administration determined that a student had brought a weapon, a look-alike BB gun, to school and was showing it to several classmates. The weapon was recovered without incident.

Due to the serious nature of the offense, appropriate juvenile charges were filed with the Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office. The student was released to the custody of their parent/guardian, and the case has been referred to the juvenile court system.

“The safety of our students and school staff is our highest priority,” said Phil Smith, Chief of Police. “We commend the school staff and administrators for their immediate response and cooperation.”

Weapons of any kind are strictly prohibited on school grounds, and any such incidents will be taken seriously and handled according to the law.

The police department and school district urge all parents and guardians to have age-appropriate conversations with their children about what is appropriate to bring to school. Additionally, to report anytime they see, hear, or read something concerning, “See Something, Say Something.”
