Assistant corporation counsel for the city government of Aurora, Deborah Lang, explains the proposed amendments to Articles VII and VIII noise abatement ordinance at the Aurora Committee of the Whole meeting Tuesday.
City government documents state the purpose of the ordinance is to revise dated provisions of Chapter 29, correct both time periods and references to Code sections. In addition, the new amendment provides law enforcement additional tools to address loud and unruly gatherings. The additional changes to the article include adding “owner occupied properties” to what was previously limited to only rentals properties.
The Law Department assumes responsibility from the Police Department for issuing nuisance letters to owners of nuisance properties, though the Police Department will retain significant involvement in developing the eventual abatement strategy.
The penalties for the first offense are not more than $500; second offense, not more than $1,000; third, not more than $2,000 any additional offenses would be not more than $4,000 each.
