Helping students succeed in school and in life.
That’s the mission of Cities in Schools Aurora (CISA), Inc. said Theresa Shoemaker Monday. The executive director of CISA was the featured speaker at the Monday, July 19, meeting of Aurora Noon Lions Club at Luigi’s Pizza and Fund Center in Aurora.
The nonprofit CISA, Shoemaker said, formerly called Communities in Schools, was incorporated in 1994.
According to Shoemaker, “Our services encompass everything from school supplies, warm Winter coats, school-day counseling services and after-school homework help, snacks, and enrichment activities, at 28 local schools.”
She said CISA will distribute 2,500 back-to-school kits Saturday, Aug. 14, at Phillips Park. Included will be school supplies, backpacks, fruit, and COVID vaccinations by VNA (Visiting Nurses Associates) of Aurora.
In October, CISA will be partners with Aurora Kiwanis Club and City government of Aurora to distribute 1,700 new coats to needy children in the Coats for Kids program.
“MyTime” after school and Summer programs provide academic and homework help to students. According to Shoemaker, MyTime programs engage students after school in academics, fine arts, recreation, socialization, leadership, and team-building.
