Civil society starts with understanding, true recognition

Special days are both revealing and a part of most societies around the world. There are greater attributes to mothers than simply giving birth. Common themes include nurturing, monitoring, caring, supporting, providing leadership, and offering an abundance of love, in what ever form it may take. Where would we be without mothers?

Our collective effort in the political and civic realm should go toward cohesion, even in the face of genuine differences. National politics can pull us apart if we allow it. We must find a way to respect differences, maintain our views with the idea that it is okay for others to disagree. The group in Washington, D.C. seeks to pander to supporters and more often to donors. Pulling apart often can be more important to some operatives than what is for the good of country.

The crux of the problem can be that there are differences on what is for the good of the country. That’s why genuine listening, understanding and compromise are important elements. We truly all know the above to be true. Too often we offer an expectation that the other guy should give in and change. Be honest.

Nonetheless, learning to get along in the political world is important, even if impractical at times. It is history in the making.

• Yes, all politics are local and grow from there. All of our communities have mundane issues with which to grapple and find solutions. Civil society requires it.

Clear and Concise, Week 17 Year 2:

• The first focus is a repeat by acclaim with the explosion of misuse of the word partner, a noun. The dreaded use no doubt is unwitting, yet incorrect, when a person will say or write that, “I partnered with….No, please learn partner is a noun and a person does not partner with another person, rather, is a partner. We do not partner with a spouse. We are partners.

• We should never write in a list of events or things by ending with, and much more. Either list the other items, or, say early in the narrative, including….

• Honorable as a title is reserved for judges, without exception. Political leaders, ambassadors, and seminar speakers, may indeed be honorable individuals, however, they should not receive the designation in situations as speakers. Judges purposely receive the honorable designation, as much as anything, because society seeks their honorable judgments. Most judges do indeed follow the pattern of being honorable, thus living up to the designation. Society requires judges to be honorable. All other professions, speakers, and participants should not receive an official designation as honorable. It can get out of hand by those who do not understand and take matters into their own hands. There is rhythm in designations.

• Beauty contestants may say the key to harmony is world peace, or, many seeking cohesion may claim the key is love. Both can be achieved, if understanding is key to harmony. If a person understands, then love and an attempt at world peace would follow. We should seek understanding and the clarity will be revealing, informative, and lead to balance.
