York High School senior point guard Jeff Grace is always lending a helping hand.
From his freshman year, Grace quickly became a cornerstone in the York program.
His ability to play multiple positions, along with his unflappable personality and toughness, helped the Dukes win numerous big games through his career.
Grace built a reputation as a hard-nosed, team-first player who is willing to do anything to help the Dukes win. He played without a concern for points, or the spotlight, rarely talking about himself and always mentioning his teammates in post-game media conversations.
But, December 30, 2020, Grace’s mom, Tonia, died unexpectedly. Soon after, the York basketball program and community came to his aid to help him during the difficult period.
Dunn praised Grace’s leadership and character after his team’s comeback victory over Downers Grove North February 26. In that West Suburban Conference Silver Division game, Grace made two three-pointers and scored a team-best 18 points in a 43-36 victory over the Trojans.
“Jeffrey Grace is the ultimate leader,” Dunn said. “He’s inspiring to me as a coach, just in how he carries himself….He’s a four-year kid who has been through many wars like this, and I’m so proud of him.”
Grace admitted he’s struggled at times, but basketball and his teammates have been helpful for him. He credits his success on the court to his mother.
“She’s with me every step of the way,” Grace said of his mother. “She means so much to me. It’s just more than a game. You can’t take life for granted. Every moment of your life is precious. You have to make the most out of it and the best opportunity you get.
“It’s been pretty hard. She would want me to keep going. I have to do it with her. All my motivation is just for her, in general. She’s with me each and every day, and raised me.”
Dunn, former Yorkville High School boys head basketball coach, said Grace is the ideal student-athlete who cares about his school and teammates.
“Jeffrey has been the ultimate inspiration for not only our varsity team, but our whole program and the Elmhurst community,” Dunn said. “He’s a wonderful student-athlete that has represented York High School the right way for the past four years.
“The community was devastated to hear the passing of Mrs. Grace. Jeffrey has maintained his great attitude throughout these challenging times and has exemplified how to handle life’s extreme challenges. We continue to rally around Jeffrey and be the supportive basketball family that York and the Elmhurst community pride itself on being.”
