With extremely cold temperatures well below zero experienced over the weekend, the Aurora Fire Department responded to almost 300 calls for service, including three working fires in the last 24 hours Monday, Jan. 15 on the coldest day so far this Winter. Two of the three fires were in residential structures, which were deemed uninhabitable. The residents are said to be staying with family at this time. None of the residents were injured in any of the incidents, however, one firefighter suffered a minor injury and was treated and released at the scene.
All fires were brought under control in a short amount of time using preconnected hoselines, while other crews conducted searches for any trapped residents. All searches were clear and negative for victims. The cold temperatures made water supply connections at the fire hydrants difficult, but crews were able to overcome and secure positive water supplies to the fire engines.
Fire crew remained on all scenes until it was determined that there was no further extension or hot spots within any of the structures. Extra personnel and a warming trailer from AEMA were also called to the scenes, due to the cold weather conditions.
The fires were under investigation by the Aurora Fire Department’s Fire Investigation Team.
