The Aurora Public Library District (APLD) and the Aurora African American Health Coalition are gearing up to host a community baby shower from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5 at the Santori Library. This event is designed to provide expecting Black families with essential resources, information, and support as they prepare for the arrival of their new babies. Families that register to attend will receive free baby items courtesy of the Aurora African American Health Coalition.
The Aurora African American Health Coalition (AAAHC) is a community-based organization dedicated to improving the health of the Africa American community in Aurora. Like the library, AAAHC aims to connect people to community by providing health education and promotion of local resources. With a focus on holistic health, the organization partners with various community entities, such as APLD, to provide public health programs and events. AAAHC’s membership, composed of healthcare professionals and community members, brings diverse expertise to help eliminate health disparities, empower individuals to make informed choices, and work collaboratively towards the common goal of helping people.
This isn’t the first time APLD and the AAAHC have joined forces. In the past, we have collaborated on various initiatives aimed at promoting health, education, and community well-being. In December 2023, AAAHC held a Winter Community Resource Fair at the Santori Library where coats, hats, and gloves were distributed to over 400 attendees! This past April, the Eola Road Branch hosted a program titled African American Women’s Health where participants learned how to address common health concerns for women, including cancer prevention. “I’m excited to partner with AAAHC again!” says Senior Children’s Manager Monica Boyer. “They have always been a positive group to collaborate with and bring resources to our community. I’m looking forward to seeing how many expecting parents come to the library and make us a part of their lifelong learning journey.”
The upcoming Community Baby Shower promises to be a fun and informative event for all new and expecting families! Registrants can expect giveaways, refreshments, and conversations with licensed healthcare professionals with topics such as Black maternal health. “The parenting journey can be filled with mystery and hesitation if one is bringing up their child to their best ability.” adds Boyer. “This program can help supply multiple perspectives on child development topics.” All are welcome to participate in the discussions and any family in need will not be turned away. Registration is required to ensure there are enough materials for all attendees.
The Community Baby Shower is Saturday, Oct. 5 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Santori Library and registration is required.
