Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) issued the following statement on the second anniversary of the Supreme Court’s ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overturned Roe v. Wade:
“It is hard to believe it has been two years since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, dismantling nearly 50 years of settled judicial precedent for reproductive rights, the right to abortion care, and the right to privacy and autonomy. While I’m proud that Illinois has already codified Roe and enshrined access to safe abortion care for generations to come, far-right Republicans in Congress remain intent on passing a nationwide abortion ban that would override state laws like in Illinois.
“The aftermath of the Dobbs ruling has been devastating; 14 states have abortion bans in effect, meaning millions of women across the Nation are denied access to safe abortion care and emergency reproductive care, as well as the right to make personal and private health care decisions. Anti-choice extremists are even threatening access to fertility care that millions of Americans rely on to build their families, including IVF.
“The stakes could not be higher for the future of reproductive freedom. As long as I have a vote in Congress, I’ll continue fighting to defend women’s bodily autonomy and the right for every American to access reproductive health care.”
