The Richard and Gina Santori Public Library of Aurora is a state-of-the-art center for information, literacy, creativity, and many other services. Some individuals may not be aware that it’s a great place to learn about the flourishing technology-based, maker culture movement.
Whether it’s a 3D printer that allows to print a physical object or incredible hardware such as the Epilog Laser Cutter, a device that delivers professional quality designs on wood, glass, stone, and other materials, the APL is the place to explore cutting-edge technology.
A description of the Makerspace is prominently posted at the Santori Library in downtown Aurora. If you’re like me you might be taken by the fact that the sophisticated technology is fittingly summed up in the APL description that states, “The purpose of the Makerspace is to provide customers with innovative technology to support educational, professional, and personal goals and endeavors.”
Take it from someone who knows a thing or two about technology. Himanshu Trivedi, manager of digital services at the Santori Library puts it this way: “The Makerspace is designed to be both a self-guided and a collaborative creative environment, to make your ideas into a reality by using the state-of-the-art technology such as 3D printers, laser cutters, vinyl cutters, and poster printers. Enthusiasts, hobbyists, professionals, and the simply curious are all welcome to utilize library resources to enhance their knowledge. In addition to one-on-one help, the library also offers structured workshops for customers who want to learn and expand their knowledge beyond basics.”
A recent Intro to 3D Printing class in the Santori Library Makerspace, presented by APL digital services assistant manager Giovanna Diaz-Fabiani, who takes digital literacy very seriously, trained patrons on digital services and Makerspace technology. During the training, Fabiani talked about the maker culture while demonstrating the uses of a 3D printer to design and manufacture items.
Through a variety of outreach and partnership initiatives, the APL is expanding its array of fascinating Makerspace technology to create awareness. Initiatives focused on being partners with local schools, popular community events, school open houses, and others are under way to reach customers where they are and create awareness.
The Makerspace and fascinating technology is on the first floor of the Santori Library of Aurora in the northwest corner of the building.
