Every fall, the Aurora Public Library District transforms into a vibrant space of joyful remembrance and cultural connection. Through colorful displays and family-friendly programs, we invite the community to honor Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) with us! This vibrant tradition honors the memory of loved ones who have passed and brings families together in a celebration of life.
At the heart of Día de Muertos are the elaborate ofrendas located in the Santori Library Atrium. Decorated with marigold flowers, candles, and sugar skulls, the ofrendas encourage library visitors to pause and reflect on their own departed loved ones. “The ofrendas serve as a link between generations, where stories and memories intertwine, celebrating the lives and legacies of those who have passed away,” said library assistant, Kathy. Every year, we are impressed by the creativity and heart put forth by the individuals and community groups that participate in our ofrenda display. For the first time, we also curated an APLD community ofrenda, where customers and staff were invited to contribute photos, and we were honored to see such positive participation.
The Atrium also features Diwali altars alongside the ofrendas, as Diwali is celebrated at this time of year as well. These displays beautifully highlight both the uniqueness of each holiday and the shared values of remembrance and gratitude present in both Día de Muertos and Diwali. Together, the entire space showcases the creativity and cultural richness of Aurora’s community.
Beyond the displays, our Día de Muertos celebration continues with programs designed for families to connect and learn together. The West Branch is having a Día De Muertos Storytime Saturday, Nov. 1, at 1 p.m., with stories, music, and crafts for little ones. “I’m looking forward to seeing families sharing traditions together, and mostly giving them a space to remember their loved ones who are not with us anymore,” said library assistant Tony.
Also that weekend Sunday, Nov. 2 is our bilingual Day of the Dead Family Celebration at the Santori Library at 2 p.m., featuring lively dancing with the character Miguel from Disney’s Coco and a craft for children. “Día De Muertos is not sad,” said Mariana. “It’s an opportunity to remember our loved ones and be thankful for having them in our lives.”
From the glow of lights on an altar to the laughter of dancing children, APLD’s Día de Muertos celebrations remind us of the beauty found in remembrance. The ofrendas and altars will be available for viewing at the Santori Library through Sunday, Nov. 2.
