National Night Out was introduced in August 1984. NNO has grown to become a celebration beyond just front porch vigils and efforts amongst neighbors to send messages of neighborhood camaraderie. Neighborhoods across the Nation now are hosts to block parties, parades, cookouts, and various other community events with safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, along with visits from police, firefighters, and emergency personnel.

Former senator, Kay Bailey Hutchison stated, “The best way to build a safer community is to know your neighbors and your surroundings. National Night Out triumphs over a culture that isolates us from each other and allows us to rediscover our own communities.”

Based on the last report, Illinois had 175 cities participating in National Night Out, including, Algonquin, Aurora, Batavia, Carpentersville, East Dundee, Elgin, Geneva, McHenry, Naperville, North Aurora, Oswego, Ottawa, South Elgin, and St. Charles. Nationally, 38 million neighbors, from 17,000 communities were actively involved in National Night Out!
