Members of the Diabetes Club of Fox Valley will hold their October membership meeting Wednesday, Oct. 8, at Oak Street Restaurant, 945 Oak Street, in North Aurora.

Meeting will be held in the East Banquet Room. Dinner is optional on members’ own from the menu at 5:30 p.m. and meeting begins at 6:30 p.m.. Guests are always welcome!

Guest speakers for this month’s membership meeting will be Hlawn Tlang and Blend Dalipi, undergraduate students from Aurora University, majoring in Health Science and minoring in Chemistry, both aspiring to become medical doctors in the future. Hlawn’s dream is to become a surgeon and participate in research to give back to the community. Blend is passionate about becoming a community-oriented physician and participating in humanitarian medical work.

Hlawn and Blend, along with three other researchers from Aurora University, explored Type 2, Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) from two perspectives.

They first, investigated how diabetes affects the wound healing process at a cellular level, by introducing peptidoglycan (PGN) to mimic a bacterial infection and analyzing gene expression levels. Then the researchers aimed to understand the high prevalence of diabetes, in local communities within Illinois, by conducting a bilingual survey, in English and Spanish, across places of worship, work sites, and community clinics, assessing for risk factors, healthcare access, attitudes, and awareness.

Invite a friend, family member or business associate to attend this meeting with you, to learn about Aurora University’s students notable findings, including how important diabetes prevention programs could be if available, and their new research project.
