Members of the Diabetes Club of Fox Valley held their May membership meeting Wednesday, May 14, at Oak Street Restaurant, 945 Oak Street, in North Aurora.

Club vice president of programs, Chuck Nelson, introduced guest speaker, Mark Gaffino, mayor and Village president of North Aurora, stated, “Mayor Mark Gaffino has lived his entire life, a little over 60 years, in North Aurora, graduating from West Aurora High School, raising his family with wife Debra and his two children, John and Amanda. He is a small business owner—a landscaping contractor—and has served in that position for over thirty years. His experience of owning and managing a business, as well as getting to know many members of the North Aurora community, brings a common sense, down to earth approach to government. Mark Gaffino was elected to the Village Board in 2005 as a trustee, served as interim mayor for a few months in early 2021, before he was elected mayor later that year.”
Mayor Gaffino, who was just re-elected to his second term as mayor, has owned North Aurora Landscaping Company, for 35 years, enlightened all in attendance about what’s happening in North Aurora. Several new businesses coming to North Aurora are, Gas & Wash, Kids Empire, Burlington Coat Factory, Wing Snob, Giordano’s, along with Clover Senior Living. The Promenade Hotel will become Senior Apartments, and MooseLake II, a new home development. North Aurora is also building a new Public Works building on Butterfield Road, and working to improve the Veterans Memorial at Willoway and Oak Street, with walking paths, landscaping and pergolas. The Village hopes to develop Block One (near Harner’s Bakery) into a Town Square, with townhomes on top and commercial space on the bottom. Food Truck Festival will be held Friday, May 23, Dog Days of Summer Saturday, July 19, and October Fest Saturday, Oct. 4.

Our Club’s May ‘Meet and Greet’, organized by media chairperson, Ann McBride, to expose our Club and our mission, was held Saturday, May 17, at Panera Bread, 1690 S. Randall Road, in Geneva. Diabetes Club members handed out information on prediabetes, diabetes and healthy eating.
