The Diabetes Club of Fox Valley (DCFV) held another successful “Mini Fundraiser” December 9, at Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria, 1720 N. Orchard Road, in Aurora.

DCFV fundraising chairperson, Jenny McCain, said, “Club members have been a big help spreading the word to family and friends, about our club’s monthly mini fundraisers held at various restaurants and food vendors.

“We held our first mini fundraiser in October, at Panera Bread, on Orchard Road, in Aurora. In November we were in Batavia, at Portillo’s on Randall Road, and Lou Malnati’s Piazza was our third mini fundraiser. I’ve been reaching out to various restaurants and food vendors, who would be willing to donate back a percentage of sales, generated by our club members and friends of DCFV, once a month on a specified date.”

Members of the Diabetes Club of Fox Valley work together, to raise an awareness of diabetes and prediabetes in the Fox Valley area. DCFV members also raise funds to provide aid, education and research to find a cure for diabetes. In November, the Diabetes Club of Fox Valley donated $3,000 to the University of Chicago Medicine-Kovler Diabetes Center, for diabetes research.

Nationally, more than 38 million Americans, approximately 12% of our population, have diabetes, including children. Even more concerning, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) estimates that 97 million individuals in the United States are prediabetic.

Regular physical activity can delay or prevent diabetes. Being active is one of the best ways to delay or prevent type 2 diabetes. It can lower your weight and blood pressure, and improve cholesterol levels. One way to be more active is to try to walk for half an hour, five days a week. If you don’t have 30 minutes, take shorter walks multiple times each day.

Weight loss can delay or prevent diabetes. Reaching a healthy weight can help you a lot. If you’re overweight, any weight loss, even seven percent of your weight can lower your risk of diabetes. For example, losing approximately 15 pounds if you weigh 200.

Uncontrolled blood sugar (glucose) can cause vision problems, heart problems, nerve damage, dental problems, kidney damage, and loss of limbs. Diet and exercise are two of the most powerful tools we have to help control our blood glucose. Eat healthy, stay active, and have a yearly blood test, to stay diabetes-free!
