Katrina Boatright, manager of senior and disability services for the City of Aurora Community Services Department, spoke on the progress she and her staff members have made over the last two-and-one-half years.

Ms Boatright’s first priority was to listen and learn what services were needed by seniors and persons with disabilities and what resources the City already had in place. She made 12 listening stops prior to putting her plan in place, including the creation of a Senior Resource Guide, for Aurora and the surrounding counties. The 80-page booklet, which will be updated yearly, contains an enormous amount of information of services available to seniors. She is working on a Disabilities Resource Guide, which should be ready for distribution later this year.

Ms Boatright started the Snow Angels Program, which is a group of volunteers, who clear snow off walks and driveways for seniors, and is putting together a lawn-care program for seniors. Her newest proposal, soon to be announced, is an Aging In Place Campaign, to help keep seniors in their homes. She would like to see Aurora become more involved in National Diabetes Month in November. Uncontrolled blood sugar (glucose) is a disability, however, eating healthy, staying active, and having a yearly-blood test, helps to stay diabetes-free!
