The Aurora Public Library District is a place full of possibilities—whether you’re diving into a new book, attending a program, or exploring a new skill. But tucked within its walls is one space where imagination and innovation come to life in a hands-on way: the Makerspace. As we prepare to expand this service in the coming years, we’re opening the doors wider than ever—and we want you to see what’s inside.

The Makerspace is a creative and interactive area at the Santori Library equipped with tools like 3D printers, laser cutters, vinyl cutters, and design software. It’s where technology meets imagination, and everyone—from beginners to experienced makers—is welcome. “The Makerspace has been open by appointment only since 2020,but we’ve consistently heard from our community that they want more casual access,” said Makerspace manager, Elliot. “We want to adjust the way we serve our customers to better align with what the community needs.” In response, the library is now hosting a series of Makerspace Open House events—a chance to explore, learn, and create, with no appointment needed.

Join us at a Makerspace Open House, held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Santori Library on the following Thursdays: July 17, July 24, August 7, August 14, September 11, and September 25. To find out more about available equipment, project ideas, and how to prepare for your visit, check out www.aurorapubliclibrary.org/makerspace. While there is no cost to use the Makerspace machines, materials come with a small cost, so be sure to review pricing information before you begin your project.

During the open houses, held on select Thursdays through September from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., visitors can tour the space, see the machines in action, and learn about upcoming programs and workshops. “It’s always exciting to open our doors and welcome people into the Makerspace—especially those who had no idea it was even here,” adds Elliot. “Once they step inside and see what’s possible, their faces light up as they start imagining what they could make.” The Makerspace supports creative goals of all kinds. “We had a workshop recently where customers used our laser cutter to engrave and assemble wooden flowers,” Elliot shares. “The project turned into a beautiful keepsake that reminded me of crafts passed down through generations.” Whether you’re interested in engraving, prototyping, crafting, or just curious about the tools, this is your chance to explore.

Beyond creativity, the Makerspace has real impact. It provides access to tools and technology that might otherwise be out of reach. “Everyone in the Aurora community should have the opportunity to pursue artistic dreams or scientific goals, to prototype an invention, or create signage for their business without overspending,” Elliot said. The impact hits home when we hear directly from our customers. “There are so many resources that help me as an artist, and I love the Makerspace!” said one customer. “My project was completed in a professional and timely manner. I was very pleased with it,” replied another. Our West Branch also has a maker area for customers to use, with various tools and knowledgeable staff to help. Looking ahead, the library plans to open a second Makerspace at the Eola Road Branch in 2026 as part of the renovations, offering you even more ways to explore and achieve your goals.
