Drive-thru at Portillo’s Hot Dogs in Oswego for Dominican Literacy Center of Aurora

Portillo’s Hot Dogs, LLC, 2810 Route 34 in Oswego, will be host to a drive-thru fundraiser from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, for the Dominican Literacy Center of Aurora.

Dominican Sister and Center founder/director, Kathleen Ryan, said the public is invited. She said the event, the Center’s first drive-thru fundraiser, is sponsored by the Center’s activities committee.

According to Sister Ryan, the restaurant will return 20% of proceeds to the Center if customers’ bring in a fundraiser flier or show it on a smartphone. The flier is on the center’s website, www.dominicanliteracycenter.org and on the Center’s Facebook page, facebook.com/domlitctr.

The Dominican Literacy Center, 260 Vermont Avenue in Aurora, is a non-profit organization dedicated to teaching English and citizenship to the immigrant community.

Women who come to the DLC for one-on-one English tutoring are immigrants from countries including Mexico, Guatemala, Columbia, Argentina, Venezuela, Poland, Russia, and Vietnam. Most students are natives of Mexico.

All of the women have a common desire: To be able to communicate in their new country. Women who attend the DLC put themselves on the path to a successful life in their new country. Learning English language skills helps the women to become informed mothers, confident workers, and full participants in life in the United States.

Any woman age 17 and older who wishes to learn to read, write and speak English is welcome.

DLC tutoring sessions are held five mornings, four afternoons and three evenings weekly.
