“Let them eat pie,” a modern twist on a French Revolution quote, was the theme after a 10:30 a.m. worship service, at Wesley United Methodist Church, Sunday, March 16. Congregants celebrated Pi Day by sampling 12 varieties of pie during a pie potluck.

Lead pastor Reverend Tammy Scott said congregants donated pies in two categories: Sweet and savory.

Sweet pies included cherry, apple, pecan, blueberry, boysenberry, pumpkin, rhubarb, mango, and sweet potato.

Three savory pies were, the pastor’s chicken pot pie, a Spanish omelet, and yooper pasties, traditional Upper Peninsula-style pies containing onions, carrots, potatoes and ground sirloin.

In addition to pies, congregants donated glazed donuts, mini cupcakes, and green grapes. Coffee and water were provided.

Most Pi Day observances are held March 14 to honor Pi, the Greek letter π. It is an infinite irrational number, 3.14, that represents the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of a circle.

Engineers, mathematicians and other scientists use it in calculations. Although the decimal digits of π continue forever, the number is commonly rounded to 3.14.
