Election is in the air, and more than just high-television visibility of the election season for the presidency of the United States. How many voters’ minds will be changed by the first televised debate in this cycle Tuesday of this week is of little consequence, especially with two more presidential debates and one debate for the vice-presidential candidates on the horizon.

Election is in the air for U.S. Senate, congressional districts, State Senate, and State House of Representatives. It is time to be informed.

Election is in the air for Aurora government, even though the primary elections will be in February 2021. We at The Voice have run information on candidates who have declared, both for mayor of Aurora and in the Aurora aldermanic races. In the last week we have received three more news releases for candidates in Aurora, one for mayor and two for aldermanic races. The notice for mayor is actually the intention of mayor Richard C. Irvin to run for re-election in 2021. Two other candidates have declared for mayor, Judd Lofchie and John Laesch. Mr. Irvin is in his first term. Declaring for aldermanic positions are incumbent William Donnell in the Fourth Ward, and newcomer Brooke Shanley for alderman-at-large.

The Voice is packed again this week. Each week we leave out information and news and feature stories we would like to include. Rather than trim the information, or, use one article and not another, we will include in full, the information on the Aurora candidates on our website, thevoice.us. If we were blessed with additional paid advertising we would have more pages for more photos and information. The Voice reflects the economic times we all live in, and, recognition of situations must be clear and concise.

The late Herminia Rodriguez Gasca is the first Latina to be honored with a street name. There are other such honorary street names for impactive residents of Aurora.

“Herminia was a true pioneer of our community,” said Ward 2 alderwoman Juany Garza. “She gave so much to everyone and asked for nothing in return.”

Mayor Irvin was a part of the celebration Saturday. She moved to Aurora in her late teens more than 70 years ago with her husband, Rodriguez Gasca. She was a part of a handful of Latino families who lived in abandoned boxcars.

Her 90th birthday would have been Monday, Sept. 28, two days after the celebration of naming the street in her honor. She raised 10 children and was an involved community activist to help those in need.

She was known as a trailblazing businesswomen and a genuinely giving person.

Clear and Concise, Week 39:

• We can be clear by not responding to robocalls, spam calls, or scam calls. We can be concise when we understand the content of uninvited calls.

• Repeat: We build walls in politics if we see only heroes and enemies; we vs. they, or, us vs. them. It truly poisons the essence of democracy.
