A diverse group of applicants have expressed interest in serving as Aurora’s next Ward 1 alderman.
Due to the resignation of Ward 1 Alderman Emmanuel Llamas, the Aurora mayor must appoint a new alderman to serve until the next general election in April 2025.
The group consists of nine men and two women, nine of whom live in the 60505 area of the ward, and two of whom live in the 60502 area of the ward.
Mayor Richard Irvin has interviewed all 11 candidates:
•Steve Banks, neighborhood group leader;
•Dan Barreiro, school board member and retired City executive;
•Tina Bohman, former Ward 1 alderwoman and retired City of Aurora staffer;
•Donnell Collins, retired photojournalist and educator;
•Jeffrey Donelson, senior pastor and Army veteran;
•David Givens, financial services professional;
•Ray Hull, retired City executive and former school board member;
•John Kunkel, retired sales executive;
•Guadalupe Magana, customer service professional;
•Hector Martinez, construction superintendent and Army National Guard veteran;
•Hugo Saltijeral, non-profit executive;
Finalists will be announced by the end of this week, and Irvin will present his recommendation to the Aurora City Council at the next Committee of the Whole Meeting at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, at Aurora City Hall, 44 E. Downer Place. Please note that the meeting will start an hour earlier than normal due to the National Night Out schedule.
