When you step through the doors of the Aurora Public Library District (APLD), let the warmth of the Library surround you, and prepare to be enchanted by the opportunities that await. One new opportunity has just begun, one that is sure to keep you challenged and entertained during the Winter months. Our Annual Winter Reading Adventure begins Friday, Dec. 1 and starts off with a magical bang! Join us and discover the magic that unfolds within the Library.
For the first time ever, we will have a Winter Reading Adventure Kick-Off Party from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1. Visit the Santori Library during downtown Aurora’s First Friday event and meet Anna and Elsa! The Ice Queen and Ice Princess, provided by Princess Party Chicago, Inc., will chat with visitors, take photos, and lead us all in a sing along so make sure you warm up before you attend. One way to warm up would be to take a photo in front of our green screen and transport yourself to a tropical beach! In case you start to melt like Olaf, grab a snowball treat to cool off (while supplies last). Before you go, be sure to decorate your own luminaria bag so you can light up the Winter sky with twinkling lights. Don’t forget to show off your craft to a Library staff member when you sign up for the Winter Reading Adventure.
The Winter Reading Adventure is full of engaging activities for long-time Library users and newcomers alike. “Everyone is invited to participate in the WRA!” said Senior Children’s manager, Monica Boyer. “You do not have to be of a certain age or even live in Aurora to participate. This year’s activities are designed to inspire conversation and togetherness.” Activity choices include sharing time with loved ones, spending time outdoors, and visiting the library for programs. We have programs planned for all ages that intersect with the Winter Reading Adventure theme; winter and holiday-themed story times, themed crafts for all ages, and opportunities to create something ‘cool’ in our Makerspace. An additional feature of the WRA is that even if you can’t visit the Library, there are still activities that can be completed at home and logged online.
APLD again will be using the reading tracking software Beanstack to keep track of participants’ activities. Those who have used Beanstack will be familiar with logging activities and earning badges through their online account. If you would prefer a paper sheet, logs will be available at all Library locations. Participants are encouraged to finish their log by completing five activities in a row (vertical, horizontal, or diagonal) to make bingo. Then, come back into the Library to claim your prize! Children under the age of 12 will earn a duck-shaped snowball maker and teens and adults will earn a hearty APLD Winter Reading Adventure mug.
To earn your prize, sign up any time between December 1, 2023, and January 31, 2024 by visiting one of our four locations (Santori Library, Eola Road Branch, West Branch and the Bookmobile), or by visiting our website. Together, we can create a Winter wonderland of magic, knowledge, and shared experiences!
