Recycling old, nonworking holiday lights not only keeps them out of landfills, but recovers valuable resources such as refined copper. Glass and plastic are extracted from the strands of lights. As part of its commitment to environmental stewardship, Naperville Park District has collected holiday lights since 2010, along with other communities in a regional effort promoted by SCARCE, a DuPage County environmental organization.
