Fox Metro Water Reclamation District held a meeting Monday for residents affected by a January 24 sewer backup.
Approximately 20 people attended the hour-long session in the dining room of a McDonald’s restaurant at 2095 W. Galena Boulevard in Aurora.
Speakers were Chuck Nelson, Fox Metro trustee; and Karen Clementi, Fox Metro district manager.
Nelson said, “Fox Metro and the City of Auora’s Water and Sewer Department immediately responded and noticed a large grease blockage in the 30-in. Fox Metro interceptor sewer line located along Indian Trail, east of Orchard Road.
“Fox Metro submitted claim information to its insurance company but was denied since the district was not liable due to the grease clog was not caused by Fox Metro.
“After careful review, Fox Metro determined that the plug in the sewer line was caused by a local food processor (business). Since then, Fox Metro has had several meetings with the business for the purpose of discussing the appropriate steps and best practices to prevent this type of occurrences from happening again.
“In addition, Fox Metro and the local business reached an agreement that the business would process and cover the property damage claims from the residents,” Nelson said.
Clementi said about 32 homeowners’ basements were flooded with raw sewage when the interceptor sewer line was flooded by a massive grease ball. The situation is under investigation by Fox Metro in cooperation with state and federal agencies.
