The Nolan Gallery proudly announces the opening of The Journey Quilt: A Convergence of Art and Faith—a bold and deeply moving new exhibition to debut to the public Saturday, Sept. 13, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Nolan Gallery, 33 S. Stolp Avenue, Lower Level, in downtown Aurora.

Guests are also invited to enjoy a sneak peek during Aurora’s First Friday Friday, Sept. 5, from 6 p.m.. to 9 p.m..

This exhibition is a rich visual testimony—woven from 25 years of ministry in West and Central Africa—that celebrates African heritage, global faith, and local legacy through the transformative power of art. At its center is The Journey Quilt, a one-of-a-kind textile piece created from garments worn or gifted to Nolan W. McCants during his work abroad. Every stitch carries the memory of a moment, a community, or a calling.

The quilt was masterfully crafted by Memphis-based fiber artist Mildred Clark, who brought McCants’ personal collection to life with extraordinary care and craftsmanship. But the story doesn’t end there.

The exhibit also features a collection of striking, award-winning photographs captured by Nolan W. McCants throughout the same period. These images—layered with emotion, cultural depth, and reverence—have received national acclaim and have been exhibited in museums, juried shows, and galleries across the United States. Together, the quilt and photography create a multidimensional experience—bridging continents and generations through image, texture, and story.

The Journey Quilt is both a work of art and a sacred document. It connects traditions, identities, and shared faith from Africa to Aurora, inviting viewers to experience a legacy of resilience, purpose, and spiritual impact. This exhibit speaks to the enduring power of art to preserve memory, spark conversation, and inspire change.

Nolan W. McCants is an award-winning fine art photographer, cultural curator, and visionary leader. In 1996, he became the first African American pastor in Plainfield, Ill., and later founded Journey Center Global, a hybrid ministry blending faith, digital innovation, and community outreach.
