The Aurora American Legion baseball season, in spite of dropping from eight teams last season to six this season, is in full swing and on the way to July 25 league season end. This year the Colt League, for players younger than the 17 years and under of the American Legion, has eight teams. The Colt League teams include Geneva, North Aurora, Batavia, Wasco, Oswego #1, Oswego #2, Yorkville #1, Yorkville #2.
Here are the standings for the Aurora Legion League: National Division, Geneva Construction, 10-0, –; Tiger Athletic Association, 6-5, 4½ games in back; Legion Post 84, 5-6, 5½; and American Division, NewLife Mechanical, 10-1, –; Kirhofer’s Sports, 8-3, 2.0; A-Z Tax Services, 5-5, 4½.
• Kirhofer’s Sports, for many years a member of the Aurora American Legion League, this week transferred ownership, however, will keep its name under new owner, Sean Lindo. He was graduated from and played sports at Oswego High School. His father, Mark Lindo, for many years was a high school head coach in baseball and basketball. He started his successful career at Aurora Central Catholic and went to Naperville North High School. Sean Lindo recently was a buyer of athletic gear at Kirhofer’s. Doug Kirhofer will stay with the company part-time during the transition period. He played basketball and baseball at West Aurora High School and was an outstanding base-stealer at Millikin University.
•West Aurora High School head basketball coach Brian Johnson, on senior transfer Marquise Walker, the six-foot guard, who started for two seasons at St. Joseph High School in Westchester and one year at Chicago’s Curie High School: “(He) brings with him a confidence and swagger that is something that comes from experience and playing at a high level. Marquise has seen most everything on the court and we feel that he will be a player who can help us become a very good team.”
West Aurora made it one step away from the Class 4A State tournament and lost to eventual State champion Belleville West in the Normal Super-sectional.
• For those who have been wondering and do not have an Illinois High School Association calendar or access to online information about Fall sports, practices may begin August 6 for football and boys and girls golf and the other sports soon will follow. The first football games will be Friday, Aug. 24 at the earliest.
