The Chicago Cubs are on a run to stay in competition for a playoff berth. Through Monday this week, the Cubs’ record was 21-15, a percentage of .583. That winning percentage will keep the team right at the top of the National League Central Division with the Milwaukee Brewers. The Chicago White Sox were 8-27, a percentage of .229 which keeps them in contention for the worst record in American League history. Baltimore in 1988, which The Voice writer, Woodrow Carroll, in last week’s edition pointed out was 54-107. Last season, the White Sox lost 101 games.
If the White Sox pitching does not improve this season the team likely will be in contention to lose 107 games. Ouch. The Sox have some good, young, players, however, they must grow up in a hurry to win more games than last year when they were 61-101. The worst record n Major League Baseball history was the first-year New York Mets who finished with a record of 40-120 under fabled manager Casey Stengel.
By 1969 the Mets moved past the Chicago Cubs in August to win the National League pennant and kept on winning to capture the World Series championship over the American League’s Baltimore Orioles. Hope always springs eternal to change the fortunes from a bad season to a good season. Is there hope this season for the White Sox?
