High school sports this Spring have had a checkered experience with cancellations, COVID-19 ever-present, and limited schedules. Nonetheless, the approach of gratitude, and glass half-full are appropriate as a positive learning experience. There have been competition, valuable practice, and rewards.
• Congratulations to teams and individuals for success in the recent Illinois High School Association (IHSA) girls badminton State tournament. Naperville North won the single-class State championship with 18.0 points in a half-point margin over Stevenson. Neuqua Valley was tied with Fremd for third place, 12.5 points each, followed by Hinsdale South, 9.5.; Hinsdale Central, 9.0; and Metea Valley, 8.5. Bhaavya Manikonda of Naperville North won the singles championship. Sophia Wang and Vivian Kok of Metea Valley took third place in doubles.
• High School Spring sports will end April 17 and April 24. Then typical Spring sports and wrestling will begin and go until June 19.
• Batavia High School’s football team fell out of No. 1 ranking of the State coaches 7A poll for the first time in four weeks following a stunning victory by Wheaton Warrenville South, 30-7, in the DuKane Conference. “We had a ton of turnovers, Batavia head coach Dennis Piron said. “It was a tough loss.”
