They’ve had it with Winter and are going to hit the road for Orlando, Fla…figuratively, at least.
Residents at GreenFields of Geneva retirement home will participate in the senior living community’s Walk to Warmer Weather fitness challenge. February 1-28 participants will document their time involved in fitness activities, with every five minutes translating into 10 miles on their trips.
Karen Tomko, life enrichment manager, said the goal is to complete 600 minutes or 1,200 miles between Geneva and Orlando, Fla..
“That breaks down into about 20 minutes a day, which is impressive, but not unprecedented by our residents,” she said.
“Many of them are typically very active, working out regularly in our fitness classes, walking, and during nice weather, riding bikes, and golfing. It’s been different over the past year, but they’ve still been working out either in small group classes, or virtually through our programs streamed to them on our in-house TV.
“This is another way to encourage them to keep active and engaged. What’s really fun to see is that some residents are teaming up with each other for motivation.”
A map has been posted in the fitness center. Each participating resident will receive a labeled flag pin on which they’ll be able to chart their progress on the map. Everyone who makes it to Orlando will receive a commemorative T-shirt. “We’re looking forward to seeing everyone reach Orlando next month.”
