The Sierra Club, Valley of the Fox, will have its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, May 10, on Zoom,. This month’s program is on the benefits of organic farms in Kane County. Our speaker will be Matt Tansley from the Kane County Development and Community Services Department who will discuss “Growing for Kane,” how we are increasing the supply of locally-grown healthy foods and encouraging our farmers.

Growing for Kane has the dual benefits of helping to provide fresh, locally-grown foods to our community and increasing the capacity of Kane County’s food growers through support for our Fox Valley area farmers. Better nutrition is one of the top priorities for the Kane County Health Department, and Growing for Kane is helping to address those needs as well.

Growing for Kane includes our Farm to School Program, which allows student residents at the Juvenile Justice Center (JJC) to learn about horticulture and food production through hands-on experiences at the JJC’s outdoor demonstration garden. By giving students a chance to eat what they grow, they are taught that healthy eating is enjoyable and accessible to anyone.
