The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for the area in effect from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday, July 18.
The heat index temperature is expected to reach as high as 106 degrees during this time period and can be extremely dangerous to humans and pets. While the Heat Advisory is only issued for Saturday, daily temperatures throughout the weekend are expected to be in the mid to high 90s.
The Aurora Transportation Center, 233 N. Broadway, is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily as a cooling center. Guests must wear face coverings and follow social distance signage. Vending machines and bathrooms are available.
The Aurora Public Library has also opened its three branches this week as cooling centers by appointment only from noon to 6 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays, 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. Face coverings and social distancing are mandatory. Call 630-264-4117 for appointments.
Due to the Heat Advisory and out of an abundance of caution, the Aurora Farmers Market will close an hour early tomorrow. The market will be opened from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Water Street Square, 65 S. Water St. Phillips Park Zoo animals will still be onsite at the market from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m..
During this weather, the city government of Aurora reminds residents and visitors:
• Stay in an air-conditioned indoor location, as much as possible.
• Drink plenty of fluids, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
• Schedule outdoor activities carefully and pace yourself.
• Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing.
• Wear and reapply sunscreen as indicated on the package.
• Take cool showers or baths to cool down.
• Check on friends and neighbors, especially the elderly and disabled.
• Never leave children or pets in cars.
• Visit indoor public spaces such as stores and malls
• Check the local news for health and safety updates.
