Parents and caregivers of children with ADHD often face unique challenges, from managing daily routines to understanding the best ways to support their child’s growth. To help navigate these challenges, the Aurora Public Library District (APLD) is hosting an informative session, Executive Functioning & ADHD: Helping Your Child Thrive, Thursday, Feb. 20, at 6:30 p.m.. Don’t miss this opportunity to gain expert knowledge and practical solutions for supporting children with ADHD.

Executive functioning skills—such as planning, focus, and emotional control—are essential for managing one’s thoughts, actions, and emotions to achieve goals. For individuals with ADHD, some executive function skills tend to be challenging and inconsistent. These skills play a crucial role in a child’s learning and behavior, especially during the elementary years when they are rapidly developing. In this upcoming APLD program, Brigid McCormick, MA, will explain why executive functioning is vital for academic and personal success. McCormick is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and the Founder & Clinical Director of Precision ABA, where she coaches and empowers others to meet their goals. With her expert guidance, attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of ADHD and strategies that can ease daily activities for children.

Strengthening executive functioning early in life sets the foundation for improved problem-solving, organization, and self-regulation, ultimately leading to greater independence and achievement. “Parents have asked us for programming and resources related to ADHD and cognitive behavior,” said Elementary School Services Coordinator, Mariana. “We want to make sure we are exploring current topics like this, especially when information for parents and caregivers can be difficult to find.” When parents better understand their child’s unique strengths and challenges, they can provide targeted support to help build resilience and foster growth.

This program is not just about education—it’s about creating a supportive space where parents can bring their questions and concerns. By attending this program and connecting with parents facing similar challenges, attendees will be offered not only guidance but reassurance that they are not alone in this journey. Mariana added, “I hope parents and caregivers learn something new about how to support their children with ADHD and I look forward to hearing their questions.” For the duration of the program, children’s activities will be available in the room next door, allowing caregivers to focus on the discussion while their children engage in supervised activities.

For those looking for additional resources, the Santori Library offers a vast collection of books on ADHD for children, teens, and adults in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, and Polish.
