Spring sports in high schools reach the championship stages in late May and early June. We are here. The boys State track and field meet final day was Saturday, May 27. Steve Groth went to Eastern Illinois University in Charleston to capture photos. Neuqua Valley High School did the best from The Voice area with a second place finish to champion Homewood-Flossmoor. Track leans a bit to strength in sprints, however, teams with strength in field events remain in good positions.

There are two more weeks of high school State-oriented sports remaining. See the girls softball photo on page 1 in which Yorkville advanced to the Oswego Sectional championship with the 7-1 victory against Oswego East. Yorkville was set to play the winner of the Wednesday, May 31 semifinal game between West Chicago and Wheaton Warrenville South in a championship game at 4 p.m. Friday, June 2 at Oswego High School.

Other softball and baseball tournament games will continue prior to the Summer high-school sports break with June 10 State championship games.

This Spring the high-school element has been a distraction from the disappointing Chicago pro baseball teams. Through Monday this week, the Chicago Cubs were 23-30, .434, and in fourth place in a five-team National League Central. The White Sox were 22-34, .393, in fourth of the five-team AL Central.
