Libraries are for everyone. But what if you want to visit the library, but can’t? For years the Aurora Public Library District (APLD) has provided options for Aurora residents who are unable to enter the Library, including Bookmobile visits, Lobby Stop Service, and the delivery of items to those who are homebound. With the increasing popularity of home delivery since the recent COVID pandemic, it made sense to expand the service to ensure that customers who need it the most, receive care.

Prior to 2020, the Homebound Program (which is how it was previously known) consisted of monthly deliveries of Library materials to customers who were unable to visit the Library. During Spring 2020, it became apparent that the existing homebound delivery service would need to be updated for the 2020 pandemic mitigations in place at the time. As many industries shifted to contact less delivery models, the Outreach Services Department (OSD) revised the requirements to participate in the Homebound Program so a greater number of residents could receive Library materials as the COVID pandemic continued.

Now known as Home Delivery, the service provides a safe, convenient, way to receive Library materials for residents who are unable to visit a Library branch. Home Delivery is intended to assist customers who cannot visit a physical Library location or pick out items for themselves. To receive free home delivery, Aurora residents must first speak to an Outreach Services staff member to determine eligibility. Anyone who is ill, injured, or suffering from a physical handicap (regardless of length of time) is eligible. Those who reside more than two miles from a library location or lack reliable transportation may meet the criteria to receive home delivery service.

Outreach Services manager Jessica Cantarero talks about the importance of providing Library materials to those who need them most. “No one should be deprived of the many resources offered by the Aurora Public Library District due to the inability to access Library buildings or the Bookmobile. Immersing oneself in a fictional story, learning a new skill, or relaxing to music, enrich the lives of Aurora residents of all ages! Providing individuals with books, audiobooks, CDs, magazines, DVDs and games is a rewarding experience for both Library staff members and our customers.” In fact, during a recent phone call, Library staff member Laura Gartman was told, “You always give me such good books. They keep me going!” by a Home Delivery customer. “It’s always good to know when a service you provide makes a difference,” said Gartman.

If you or someone you know would benefit from receiving home delivery of Library materials, you can start right away! Request items via phone or online by selecting “Bookmobile” as the pick-up location, then call the Outreach Services Department at 630-723-2705. After determining qualification for the program, staff members will arrange a delivery date and window of time. Items will be left near the front door in a disposable plastic bag, all ready checked out to your Library account. For more information on this complimentary no-contact service, please call the Outreach Services Department at 630-723-2705, or contact us via our website at www.aurorapubliclibrary.org/bookmobile.
