Rakshabandhan is observed during the end of the Hindu lunar calendar month of Shraavana, which typically falls in August.

“Raksha Bandhan” means “the bond of protection, obligation, or care.”

Traditionally, during this time, Indian sisters of all ages tie a bracelet called the rakhi around the wrists of their brothers as the brothers promise to protect them for life.

The youth of Aurora expanded the tradition by tying rakhis around the wrists of Aurora first responders who protect and care for Aurora and the lives of all residents.

Indian students of the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS) Aurora youth group visited the Aurora Fire Departments Central Station to thank firefighters and police officers for their service by presenting them with gifts of rakhis and pastries while offering blessings and well-wishes as they continue protecting and serving the community.
